Laurina

Laurina, also called Bourbon Pointu, is an uncommon coffee variety first found on Réunion. It is a natural mutation of Bourbon. Its plants, cherries and beans have a distinct pointed shape, and it naturally contains less caffeine than typical Arabica.

Supriyanto grows Laurina on a small plot at Mount Suket. The planting material was first established by PT Perkebunan Nusantara before he began cultivating it. In Ijen, the beans grow slightly larger than other Laurina while keeping the variety’s pointed shape.

120 Hr Anaerobic Natural

Ripe cherries are sealed in plastic tanks without oxygen for 120 hours. They are then dried whole, with the fruit still around the beans. This gives the coffee more sweetness, body and depth.

The process is bold, but the cup stays clean and balanced rather than boozy or heavy. It feels round rather than juicy, with soft fruit, sugar-cane sweetness, a hint of nutmeg and a cacao nib finish.

Supriyanto grows Laurina alongside Orange, Yellow and Red Bourbon on Mount Suket.

Arabica Coffee Farmers

Supriyanto

This lot comes from Supriyanto, known as Iyan, who farms on Mount Suket in the Ijen range of East Java. We first shared his Orange Bourbon. Now we return to the same producer for something far less common: Laurina, grown on a small plot at 1,700 metres.

Supriyanto grows several Bourbon varieties across the farm, including Orange, Yellow and Red Bourbon. Laurina stands apart from them. Its leaves, cherries and beans have a pointed shape, and the variety is known for being difficult to grow. Supriyanto maintains it as one small part of a much wider farm.

The Laurina plants came from material first planted by PT Perkebunan Nusantara before being cultivated by Supriyanto. In the climate of Ijen, the beans grow slightly larger than other Laurina while keeping their distinct pointed form. The variety also naturally contains less caffeine than typical Arabica.

The Orange Bourbon introduced one side of Supriyanto’s work. This Laurina reveals another. Together, they show a producer working with several uncommon Bourbon types on Mount Suket, each offering a different way to understand the same farm and the coffee grown there.
